PDW co-founder Erik has always wanted to bike his dog to work, but he could never quite convince the 60+ pound lab mixes that he and his wife adopted to ride in a Burley or even a big ol’ Bakfiet. Those very good dogs were just too big and too sketched out by bikes.

Training a proper basket pup required a younger, smaller companion. Back in November, Erik and his wife found just that when they adopted Sammy from an employee at Cyclepath Bike Shop in Portland. Just 8 pounds and 4 months old, Sammy was Erik’s chance to train a bike dog in its formative years.

Sammy the dog in a bike basket

First, though, Erik needed to build a bike worthy of the task. He took some parts off his beloved Signal Cycles commuter and transferred them to a Kona Dew Plus, which had longer and more stable geometry.

To keep things custom, Erik designed a special vinyl sticker set to rebrand the bike. The head badge features Sammy’s portrait, while the downtube has “Sammy Cycles” decals. Erik tacked on a full suite of PDW accessories and, voila, Sammy Cycles was born.

Fortunately, Sammy took to riding in the basket almost immediately and now accompanies Erik as he commutes along the Willamette River to and from work almost every day. The duo are a delight to passers-by, and the daily doggy pedal is a dream come true for Erik.
